What is Paving, and why
do we need it?

We always keep first and for most in our minds basic asphalt teachings.

Raw ground is where it all begins.  We must always respect Mother Nature and her powers.

Once we can see what you have imagined, we begin by examining the area you wish to change, taking into account the lay of the land (grade) and the flow of water (drainage)

Surveying the area via the naked eye of our professionals or with the use of a transit, we can see our limitations and course of action.  Bringing to light low water areas, the need for culverts, drainage ditches or redistribution of earth (small hills or filing of large low areas)

Transformation begins with the required alterations.  This may include tree removal, flattening of small hills, major drainage changes and redistribution of earth or (in most cases) a simple clearing of vegetation & smoothing over with a skid steer or small motor grader.

We typically use ¾” to dust limestone base to level the ground. Areas requiring a thicker base foundation (4” or more) we begin leveling with 1 ½” limestone base and cap the area with ¾” to dust for a smooth uniform finish. The difference in material is the size of the rock.

Commercial areas and areas prone to extreme amounts of water flow or weight may require a Type A Asphalt or Black Base. This is simply a 1 ½” limestone base with oil emulsion added to it. You see it in a lot of highway work. Most folks studying the ins and outs of asphalt instillation will come across TXDOTS specifications for asphalt instillation. They require this type of asphalt base foundation.

For smaller jobs (almost anything smaller then as interstate) this is intense overkill, not only for the work at hand but for your budget.

Once the limestone base has been installed the compaction process begins by applying water to the material and rolling it as we go.  Larger foundations will be wet and compacted in 3” lifts, ensuring compaction from the ground up.  Application of water varies by the size of the job.  Small driveways can be hosed down by hand as they are rolled.  Larger jobs will require the use of a water tank for distribution.

We then must allow your driveway to cure (dry out) laying asphalt over a saturated foundation can cause the area to collapse.

Once your foundation has cured (typically overnight) we will lay your asphalt surfacing

Common Types of Asphalt Surfacing

Type D Asphalt

Smooth surfacing found in any commercial lot (think local grocery store or ice house)

Chip Seal Asphalt
